As perfect as a car might be for you, all that means very little if it doesn’t go on to prove reliable.

As models that are often bought on the strength of their cost value and affordability to run, reliability is of particular importance when it comes to considering a small used car for your next vehicle.

After all, what is the use of bagging a bargain if you’re destined to pay a premium down the road if it fails to prove durable?

Of course, no-one can predict what the future will hold, but a reliable reputation for certain models will go a long way to allaying concerns that they will one day demand costs in repairs and maintenance.

Here we’ve collated six reliable small cars based on various customer satisfaction surveys that have an excellent record for not letting drivers down…

Hyundai i10

It might be small, but the Hyundai i10 is mighty when it comes to reliability with both What Car? and Autocar ranking it as the most reliable small car in its respective surveys.

That spells excellent news for those looking to keep costs down for the i10 is not only one of the best value small cars on the used market (not to mention one of the cheapest new cars in the UK outright), it’s also cheap to insure and is very frugal.

The reliability score stems from the i10 being a proven package with underpinnings that have been in production for many years now.

In fact, What Car? highlighted it as one of just four cars it surveyed in 2025 that achieved a 100 per cent reliability score, meaning not a single owner reported any faults over a 24-month period.

MINI Cooper

The MINI Cooper is undeniably desirable out of the box, but that fond feeling is destined to remain for years to come if its reliability scores are anything to go by.

Publications Auto Express, Autocar and What Car? have all lauded the MINI for its reliability based on customer feedback surveys.

While the MINI’s entertaining driving experience, retro chic styling and high-end interior means it is easy to be wooed by what it offers on the surface, its perennially strong reliability scores prove it is just as impressive where it counts.

Toyota Aygo X

Much like the i10, the Toyota Aygo X scored very strongly in the What Car? Reliability Survey last year, with no owners reporting faults that consigned it to spending any time off the road.

While Toyota has a globally recognised reputation for building cars that last, it’s still reassuring to know this record for dependability stretches to its smallest model too.

Better yet, Toyota offers an industry-leading 10-year warranty, which means there is a good chance a used Aygo X will still have manufacturer warranty left to run from when it was new.

Honda Jazz

Much like Toyota, Honda enjoys a positive reputation when it comes to reliability and much of this is down to the metronomic durability performance of its smallest model, the Honda Jazz.

What the Jazz might lack in fun it more than makes up for in flexibility thanks to a large, spacious interior featuring seats that can do all sorts of gymnastics to extend the room on offer.

More recent models have also been available with a hybrid powertrain, which ensures the Jazz is one of the most frugal used cars you can buy on the used market.

Citroen C3

Having been replaced by a radically different model within the last 18-months, the new Citroen C3’s arrival serves to make its predecessor, the Citroen C3 Mk3, an even more tempting small used car proposition.

Indeed, the C3 in its erstwhile guise was already one of the UK’s best value models with bargain pricing being complemented by fun styling, a spacious interior and a comforting ride.

Even more exciting is the fact the C3 ranked second overall in Auto Express’ Driver Power survey for reliability, an extraordinary result for such an affordable model.

Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift is a veritable veteran of the small car sector but more recent models have become increasingly popular on the strength of its generous standard equipment, cute looks and easy-to-drive nature.

It has also won plaudits for its reliability record with the Swift coming out top of What Car’s Reliability Survey in 2023, citing ownership as being a ‘trouble-free experience’.

It’s just another facet to the Swift’s talent skillset with the model proving engaging on the road and frugal at the pumps too.
